Policy recommendations & actions

Food Secure Canada has been busy talking with members and other food-system stakeholders, helping to set the stage for A Food Policy for Canada. It all started with a discussion paper, From Patchwork to Policy Coherence. We followed-up with our Five Big Ideas and a series of community engagement events across Canada to bring diverse grassroots and practitioners’ perspectives to the consultations. With the support and input of our members and partners, we submitted the following documents to the federal government on the development of A Food Policy for Canada:

FIVE BIG IDEAS FOR A BETTER FOR SYSTEM PROPOSAL

NATIONAL FOOD POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS

A NEW GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE FOR FOOD POLICY

PRESENTATIONS TO PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEES

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS

A New Governance Structure for Food Policy

December 2017

As the Government develops A Food Policy for Canada to provide an integrated approach to food-systems, governance has emerged as a critcal issue. Additional Policy Briefs and Reports

A Roof Over Our Stomach July 2021

What was the process that led Canada to a legislated right to housing? Could a similar approach be used to legislate the right to food, which is also an entitlement? Tasha Stansbury explores these questions in "A Roof Over Our Stomachs: The Right to Housing in Canada and its Implications for the Right to Food", a thought-provoking paper on the Canadian housing rights and its implications for food rights.

Right to Food Brief October 2017

FSC signed on a special brief on the right to food developed by PhD student Nadia Lambeck on behalf of the Ad-hoc working group on the right to food. The brief is supported by a range of human rights groups and experts. This brief is a direct follow-up to the Mission of the UN Special rapporteur on the right to food in 2012.

This initial discussion paper outlined the key principles and priorities that should be addressed as the consultation is undertaken and as the policy is developed.
