This first FSC Assembly held in Atlantic Canada featured a special focus on fisheries and how the food movement can help rebuild a sustainable fishing industry that produces healthy food while supporting coastal economies. Our opening plenary featured two fisheries experts from Atlantic Canada - Kerry Prosper from Paq'tnkek Mi'kmaw Nation and Susanna Fuller from the Ecology Action Centre - and fisheries issues were integrated into the workshops, presentations and discussions held over the weekend.
These sessions discussed solutions to some of the biggest problems facing the sustainable seafood movement today, including:
- how 'seafood hubs' can help small producers compete with large integrated supply chains;
- how small-scale fishers and their allies can get more involved in influencing fisheries management decisions; and,
- how the food movement's 'fish people' can make sure to integrate their work into the broader agenda.
Participants at the Assembly also enjoyed local sustainable seafood options at several of the meals over the weekend provided by Off the Hook, Atlantic Canada's first community supported fishery!
