On May 30, Food Secure Canada, along with over one hundred other national and local organizations, as well as a long list of academics, sent Prime Minister Harper a letter expressing our indignation at the government's treatment of Olivier de Schutter, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, during his recent mission to Canada.  Read the letter here (PDF).

Powering Up! Food for the Future

Food Secure Canada's 7th national Assembly

November 1-4, 2012 in Edmonton, AB

Call for Workshops and Presenters

Canada’s food movement will gather in Edmonton from November 1-4 this year for its biennial feast of food and ideas. The theme – Powering Up: Food for the Future – reflects the need to place questions of energy, climate and long-term sustainability at the centre of how we think about, produce, and eat our food.

This year we will be looking for workshops, training sessions, panellists, speakers and more to address the following themes (you can submit proposals on other themes as well): Food Justice, Energy and Power, and Resilience.

Submit your proposal and find out more, and we hope to see you in Edmonton!

Wheat board appeal tests democratic principles

The Federal Court of Appeal heard arguments Wednesday in the federal government's appeal of a ruling that found its introduction of legislation to revamp the Canadian Wheat Board broke the law.

Wednesday's hearings began with a failed attempt by the Friends of the Canadian Wheat Board advocacy group and others, including former wheat board directors, to quash Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz's motion to appeal. The court ruled the appeal could proceed.

Food System Development Practitioner survey

The Food System Development Practitioner survey is cosponsored by American Farmland Trust (AFT), the Wallace Center at Winrock International, the Michigan State U. Center for Regional Food Systems (formerly the C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems), and the Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development (JAFSCD).

These groups are surveying current or prospective food system development practitioners (including professionals and volunteers) to better understand their needs and opportunities. The results will be shared publicly (although all responses are anonymous) and used to inform the work of a broad range of organizations and agencies.
