Revamping our Bylaws: FSC’S Annual General Meeting
Save the Date: 27 November 2013
As we reported at our General Assembly last November in Edmonton, Food Secure Canada is currently updating our bylaws to conform with the new Federal Not for Profit Act. (All federally incorporated non-profits must do so by October 2014). Our Steering Committee and our Governance Sub-Committee have been working hard to come up with proposals that meet the needs of our membership and makes us a stronger and more democratic organization. Sometimes it feels as though we are trying to stick a square peg into a round hole! However, in the coming months we shall be consulting our members on our new proposals, which will then be further refined based on your input, and hopefully adopted at our next Annual General Meeting, to be held 27 November 2013, probably in Montreal. Mark your calendar and make plans to join us. Food Secure Canada belongs to its members and supporters across the country and we count on your involvement in this discussion about its future. Stay tuned.

Local & Sustainable Food Systems Network
The Network meets every two months on the second Thursday via a teleconference. The April conference call of the Local & Sustainable Food Systems Network featured a presentation by FarmStart’s Christie Young, describing the genesis of their programs. Read more.
The Network’s next teleconference will take place on June 13th and will be in French. Additional information will be provided closer to the event.
FSC Celebrates National Day of Collective Kitchens in Quebec
On March 26, FSC took part in the 16th Quebec collective kitche ns' day organized by the Quebec Collective Kitchens Association. The Association organized a guided tour of Montreal and its rich history of community kitchens and gardens. Operating in Quebec since the 80s, today around 1,400 collective kitchens serve more than 35,000 Quebecers in need. Continue reading.
FSC Participates in New Farmers Initiatives Tour in Southwestern BC
 In his 2006 E.F. Schumacher Society lecture Richard Heinberg called for 50 million new farmers. And while we may not need quite so many in Canada, we are still in desperate need of new and additional farmers. With almost 50% of our farmers 55 years
old or older, and 75% of them without a next generation to take over the farm, we are
running out of time to train up their replacements.
During the week of March 18th, FarmStart founder, Christie Young, and Abra Brynne, FSC’s coordinator of the Sustainable Food Systems Network, toured communities in southwestern BC, meeting with individuals and organizations working on new farmer initiatives. Continue reading.
