National School Nutrition Program on the Menu at Parliamentary Finance Committee Pre-Budget Hearings
For immediate release
19 November 2012
Montreal, QC - On November 20, 2012, Diana Bronson, Executive Director of Food Secure Canada (FSC), a national organization of hundreds of organizations and individuals, will appear before the Standing Committee on Finance to take part in the 2012 pre-budget hearings.
This meeting will take place from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm in room C-110, 1 Wellington Street.
FSC will recommend the creation of a national school nutrition program as the first step towards building a national food policy.
Health Canada reported in 2007-2008 that 1.92 million Canadians aged 12 and above were living in food insecure households, of which 228 500 were children aged 12 to 17. Additionally, one in four Canadian children and youth is overweight or obese and increasingly diagnosed with related health issues such as diabetes.
FSC’s stance on this issue stems from the People’s Food Policy, where more than 3,500 Canadians developed recommendations aimed at creating a sustainable, healthy and fair food system for Canada.
