Call for Proposals: Food Secure Canada’s 8th Assembly

November 13-16, 2014 Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

No matter where you stand in the food system or the food movement, we want to hear from you!

Co-hosted with the Food Action Research Centre (FoodARC) in collaboration with ACORN and the NS Food Security Network, Canada’s food movement will gather in Halifax this year for its biennial feast of food and ideas – the first in Atlantic Canada! For three action-packed days, people from many different walks of life who are passionate about building healthy, sustainable food systems where no-one is hungry will gather to share, strategize and build a better future for food in Canada.

Conference Board of Canada to unveil Food Industry’s Strategy

As an organization with an active interest in a national food policy for Canada, FSC has been watching the Conference Board of Canada (CBOC)’s progress on its “Canadian Food Strategy”. This work has been under way since 2010.  

The CBOC has issued 19 research papers and has held a nationwide consultation process based on an online survey.  It has held two national “Food Summits” and , as we go to press, is about to unveil its national food strategy at a third Summit, March 18-19, 2014 in Toronto.

Local & Sustainable Food Systems Network News

Members of the Local & Sustainable Food Systems Network tend to be doers – engaging actively in the work of re-creating vibrant, place-based food systems. 

Working groups have begun emerging where there is a critical mass of people interested in a particular facet of food systems work. Two of these groups held their first meeting in January, coming together via teleconference to learn about each other’s initiatives, to exchange information and to commit to future encounters

FSC will be facilitating a workshop at Powershift Atlantic. Through sharing their experiences and engaging in groupthinking, the participants will critically examine their social justice movements with an anti-racism lense. We hope to see you there.

A petition on BC's Salmon Fisheries

Department of Fish and Oceans is proposing sweeping changes to how BC’s salmon fisheries are managed. At the core of this proposal is a shift to Individual Transferable Quotas, or ITQs. Read more here.
