[EVENT] Shifting Ground: Transitioning to Diversified, Agroecological Food Systems

Today's industrial food and farming systems have succeeded in supplying large volumes of foods to global markets. Yet, they are increasingly creating problems on multiple fronts: widespread degradation of land, pollution and destruction of ecosystems and waters, and biodiversity loss – even as hunger and malnutrition persist in alarming numbers.

Worldwide, the agriculture and food system is responsible for one third of our greenhouse gas emissions. In Canada, conventional agriculture alone is responsible for 11-13 per cent of GHG emissions. Meanwhile, ecological agriculture approaches around the world have proven that they can increase biodiversity, strengthen ecosystem resilience, reduce and sequester carbon, and improve both food security and farm livelihood.

PARTICIPANTS

• Emile Frison: Former Director General of Bioversity International, who has held senior positions in international agricultural and food security organizations. Dr. Frison is a member of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems, and lead author of the recent report "From Uniformity to Diversity" that outlines a rationale and path for a transition to multi-functional, diversified agroecological systems. He will share his perspectives on why this shift is needed and how we can get there.
