Taking Action to Create A Healthier Food Environment

GOAL: To create healthier food environments across Ontario by sharing knowledge, resources and tools to build capacity for research, policy and action at the local community level among health promotion professionals and community partners. The vision for the day is to be participatory and interactive to ensure you will be able to apply the knowledge and skills gained in your own community. Be prepared to be open to sharing your experiences and to learn from others. Participants will also “sleuth the food environment” by taking a field trip to a nearby retail food outlet to assess the health of the local food environment.

YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT: - The latest food environment research and initiatives to highlight opportunities for policy and projects to improve the food environment - How to engage in municipal planning, partnerships and the policy process - Tools and resources that will help you take action in your community

TOPICS INCLUDE: - Food environment concepts, measures and research in Canada - The retail food environment and media representation of the food environment - The Smart Cities, Healthy Kids initiative and other food environment projects - Resources and tools to assess the food environment, developed specifically for the Canadian context - A field trip to assess the local food environment - Engaging your community and creating multi-stakeholder, cross-sector collaborations/partnerships - Strategies for working with municipal players, planners and local community decision-makers
