In recent years, a number of eating patterns, including Paleo, gluten-free, and dairy-free diets have become popular for both weight loss and disease prevention. This presentation will cover:
• An overview of some of these popular diets, including foods permitted and restricted;
• The evidence (or lack thereof) for the use of these popular diets for weight loss or disease prevention;
• Some of the unintended, and concerning consequences that may be associated with restrictive diets;
• Practical tips for practitioners, including how to handle challenging clients.
About the Presenter:
Jennifer Sygo, M.Sc., RD, is a registered dietitian and sports nutritionist with Cleveland Clinic Canada in Toronto, and the author of Unmasking Superfoods: The Truth and Hype Behind Acai, Chia, Blueberries, and More (HarperCollins Canada, 2014).
Jennifer completed a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at McMaster University and her master’s degree in Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences from the University of Guelph. She has been a dietitian at Cleveland Clinic Canada since 2006, where she provides clients with realistic solutions for weight management, disease prevention, and athletic performance.
A leading sport nutritionist, Jennifer works with athletes of all levels, ranging from weekend warriors to professional athletes. She is the team dietitian for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Athletics Canada, and is a consultant for Triathlon and Gymnastics Canada, and the Toronto Raptors.
Jennifer’s nutrition expertise is regularly featured in the media, including CTV’s CanadaAM, CBC Radio and Television, and Global News, and she served as the nutrition columnist for the National Post for eight years before moving to the Toronto Star in 2015. A member of the National Speaker’s Bureau, Jennifer routinely works with corporations and executives to improve their health and performance on the job.
