FSC Board Nominations 2020-2021
Join FSC’s Board of Directors for 2020 - 2021
Each year, FSC's Board of Directors reviews priorities and upcoming activities to facilitate recruitment of candidates to join the board. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many unique challenges, but it has also highlighted urgent issues within, and beyond, the food system, and will continue to influence our work moving forward.
In 2020-2021, we are looking for 2 - 4 new Board members who share this commitment to collaborative food systems transformation at multiple levels, from the grassroots to federal policy. The Board will continue to steward changes to ensure FSC’s governance is reflective of grassroots voices and the diversity of the food movement, centring Indigenous, Black and racialized leaders, communities and policy demands; reimagining future membership; and advancing food policy at the federal level to create a more healthy, just, and sustainable food system. FSC is continuing to integrate practices of anti-oppression, anti-racism and decolonization, including at the Board level, and we are seeking Board members who can help support and build into this ongoing work.
Who we’re looking for
While directors sit on the Board in their individual capacity (i.e., they are not expected to represent entire regions, groups or sectors), we continually strive to have the board reflect the diversity of food movements from coast to coast to coast. We value and will privilege applications from individuals who are rooted in movements for equity and justice, as well as applications from equity-seeking groups (including racialized groups, Indigenous communities, LGBTQ2s+, people living with disabilities, and those with lived experience of food insecurity), who are typically underrepresented on not-for-profit boards.
This year, we are particularly seeking Indigenous applicants, and applicants with experience working in/with Indigenous communities. We are also seeking applications from individuals based in Atlantic Canada.
In terms of skill sets and expertise, we will be prioritizing applicants who have strong experience in:
- Anti-oppression and anti-racism work,
- Food security program development and delivery,
- Food systems labour and union labour organizations,
- Food production/provisioning/processing, including farming, hunting, fishing, and gathering,
- Movement building/organizing,
- Financial planning,
- Fundraising
- Human Resources
Principles of inclusion
Food Secure Canada is committed to diversity and inclusion. We are pleased to consider all qualified applicants without regard to race, colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender, national origin, language, age, disability or any other legally-protected factors. If you feel you need an accommodation because of illness or disability during the application process, please do not hesitate to contact us at admin@foodsecurecanada.org for any support to meet your accommodations, or for further questions about the nominations process.
How to apply
- READ our bylaws and this document outlining the Role and Structure of the Board, including a description of Director roles and responsibilities, and the priority questions that we are using to guide our work.
- FILL IN THE FORM for the online nomination form by August 16, 2020. Candidates will be contacted and interviewed by a member of the Nominations Committee for more information.
The Nominations Committee and the Board of Directors will recommend candidates for 2020-2021, based on the needs of the organization (October 2020). Those candidates will be presented to the membership in advance of our Annual General Meeting (Date/Location TBD - anticipated between November 2020 and January 2021). Members attending the AGM will vote on the slates of candidates proposed by the board.
