Food Justice Program: highlights from the Assembly

Participants heard first hand accounts of Indigenous People and People of Colour from across the country doing innovative work to answer the needs of their communities who are disproportionately affected by food insecurity and systemic injustices. They shed light on the layers of exclusion and oppression present within our food system and challenged us to interrogate our food movement as well, existing in a Canadian context still tainted by pervasive colonial power dynamics.

Strategizing Session

At the strategizing session, participants discussed ways to ensure that this very important conversation didn't end there and that new voices be added to it. Furthermore, they identified the need for tools to fully engage the food movement in resisting and dismantling the systems of oppression present in our food systems. Staying connected was a recurring need identified by the participants and to assist with that, Food Secure Canada proposed to convene a cross-Canada Food Justice Network in partnership with FoodShare Toronto. As mentioned at the time, this work will require a pooling of resources in order to bring about transformative change capable of bringing to fruition our vision of a just, equitable and sustainable food system for all. Going to graduate school was a positive decision for me. I enjoyed the coursework, the presentations, the fellow students, and the professors. And since my company reimbursed 100% of the tuition, the only cost that I had to pay on my own was for books and supplies. Otherwise, I received a free master’s degree.
