Recap of FSC's Annual General Meeting 2019
On December 6, 2019, Food Secure Canada held its Annual General Meeting for members, with participants joining in person and virtually from across the country. The afternoon started with a beautiful opening by Elder Charles Patton, who invited participants to the space by saying, “As we come in, we leave our coats at the door and put on a new coat - the coat of collaboration and working together.”
After the AGM, a panel was held on strengthening long-term thinking and strategy in food system transformation, with special guests Larry McDermot (Plenty Canada) and Pat Mooney (ETC Group), as well as FSC Chair Melana Roberts, and our ED Gisèle Yasmeen. This was coupled with discussion groups using a world café method, where the participants had a chance to discuss questions such as: How could using a long view approach strengthen your work now? How can we center reconciliation and reparation, as well as racial justice, in walking the long path?
The day ended on a festive note at the cocktail reception, where organic wines were served as well as appetizers from the caterer Filles Fattoush, which works with Syrian newcomer and refugee women to showcase the vibrant flavours of Syrian cuisine.
Throughout the week-end, staff and board moved forward to learn about and identify tangible ways to advance our work on reconciliation and decolonization, and on racial justice through workshops.
