TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE FOOD FOR ALL - Communities in Action!

8th National Assembly full program available

Montreal, September 16th, 2014 – Food Secure Canada has announced the full programme for its bi-annual assembly, Waves of Change: Sustainable Food for All, which will take place at the Halifax Habourfront Hotel from November 13th to 16th.

Diversity at the Heart of Change

With more than sixty workshops, plenaries, and working groups, these three days of action-packed learning by Canada’s food movement will provide an unique opportunity to tackle a broad range of food issues and to create effective, collective responses to current challenges of sustainability, hunger and health.

Canada’s diverse and rapidly growing food movement is making a difference communities right across the country: farmers, fishers, cooks, dietitians, policy makers, activists, entrepreneurs, community organizers, indigenous leaders, students, academics are all building alternatives to current model. “This rich diversity is a wellspring for change. With 4 million Canadians food insecure, and epidemic of diet-related diseases and the expansion of factory farms, it is vital that new approaches be highlighted and shared.”  said Diana Bronson, Executive Director of Food Secure Canada, a national coalition concerned with hunger, healthy and safe food, and sustainable food systems.

Leading up to the elections

Over 170 people and organizations are already registered, and many well-known community activists and food champions will also be attending: Vandana Shiva, Maude Barlow, Leanne Simpson, Nick Saul, Dave Decker, Wayne Roberts, Norma Kassi and many more.

With the next federal election on the horizon, this 8th Assembly promises to be an essential gathering for change-makers. Towards Sustainable Food for All, Conversations for Change, Dialogue with Members of Parliament and Making Waves Together: Building a plan for change are four events not to be missed! One of the major goals of this gathering is to ensure that questions of food sovereignty and food justice will be at the heart of the 2015 federal election debates.

An event with an East Coast flavour

This event is organized by FSC and FoodARC at Mount Saint Vincent University, in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Food Security Network and ACORN (which will be holding a meeting of Atlantic organic farmers immediately before. This will be the first-ever FSC Assembly to be held in the Maritime Provinces, and a great opportunity to highlight vital issues linked to fisheries and local food systems, all the while enjoying the warm hospitality the East Coast is known for.

Food Secure Canada would like to thank its many sponsors, without whose support this event would not be possible: CFICE Research Project, Community Food Centres Canada, Development and Peace, FarmStart, Government of Nova Scotia, InterPares, Nova Scotia Food Security Network, The Toronto Food Policy Council,  The J. W. McConnell Family Foundation.
