School-based feeding programs: A good choice for children?

A key informant study and literature review prepared by David I. Hay and commissioned by Childhood and Youth Division, Health Promotion and Programs Branch, Health Canada in July 2000.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

"Food security is not assured for all Canadians. For a number of reasons, many families are unable to adequately meet their food needs. School-based nutrition and feeding programs (hereinafter referred to as school food programs) have been one response to this problem. Have school food programs been a sound response? What do we know about the delivery and outcomes of school food programs?

"This paper offers an analytical assessment of school food programs as a sound policy response to food insecurity. The paper discusses the findings from interviews with key informants and from a review of relevant research literature. A concluding section with recommendations closes the paper."
