The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2014 presents updated estimates of undernourishment and progress towards the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) and World Food Summit (WFS) hunger targets. A stock-taking of where we stand on reducing hunger and malnutrition shows that progress in hunger reduction at the global level and in many countries has continued but that substantial additional effort is needed in others.

Local Food Costing Calculator / Calculateur des coûts des aliments locaux

I wanted to share the Local Food Costing calculator tool that we didn’t have time to cover in the Montreal meeting. It is essentially a pre-formatted spreadsheet to compare the plate costs of  “conventional” vs. “local, sustainable” product.

There are instructions in the first two tabs of the spreadsheet. It includes a few sample produce and protein items that you can modify for your needs.

Smaller, independent pockets of concern, research, and action have grown to become dynamic, diverse, and connected food movements both within Nova Scotia and across Canada and internationally.

First Nations Food, Nutrition and Environment Study

Scientists recently concluded the First Nations food, nutrition and environment study (FNFNES). The study is a collaboration between the University of Ottawa, the Université de Montréal and the Assembly of First Nations. The FNFNES is the first national study of its kind. The newly released 2011-2012 results for Ontario detail the dietary patterns, lifestyle and general health status of 18 randomly selected First Nations communities in the province.
