Thank you for joining Food Secure Canada (FSC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to learn more about the new CIHR Environments and Health Intersectoral Prevention Research funding opportunity.
Documents from the teleconference:
- Meeting notes
- CIHR presentation
- FSC presentation
- A working document for research connections
Community organizations: Do you have a research need or question that would help you to advance your work? Bring it to this teleconference to meet academics who may want to work with you.
Up to $25,000 / year can support nonprofit organization staff who are involved in these research projects.
This is an exciting opportunity for the food movement to advance its research priorities, as the grant includes focus areas on agri-food, resource development and urban form - all of which could apply to food work. There is a particular focus on Indigenous Ways of Knowing / Two-Eyed Seeing. Some of the issues / areas of interest that FSC has identified include:
- Building and maintaining healthy food environments in schools;
- A more sustainable food system, including emphasis on healthy diets and safe food production;
- Institutional procurement of fresh, local and sustainable food in health care institutions;
- Northern food systems that reduce food insecurity and advance food sovereignty;
- Municipal food policy councils and policies, and scaling up best practices; and
- Working towards a national food policy that reflects our goals of zero hunger, healthy and safe food and sustainable food systems.
CIHR is funding projects to a maximum of $400 000 / year for up to 5 years. As always, the funding can only be accessed by independent researchers at CIHR's eligible institutions, but for these particular grants, teams must have a broad representation of researchers and knowledge users (non-academics like community organizations who will put the research to good use) from other sectors and disciplines. This includes practitioners, policymakers, decision makers or community leaders from the non-governmental and public sectors.
The deadline to submit a Letter of Intent is October 1, 2015.
The goal of this webinar is to start a conversation between community sector organizations and academics about food research priorities so that we might advance a grant proposal and project together.
