Food Sovereignty Resource for First (and all) Nations
What's the first thing you think of when you hear "food sovereignty"?
If the answer is "what's that?", here's a great tool to start thinking about who has control over our food systems, and how more food sovereignty can lead to less hunger and more ecologically friendly, safe and healthy food.
Food Sovereignty Assessment Tool is published by the Native Agriculture and Food Systems Initiative, part of the U.S. based First Nations Development Institute. However the plain language explanations, questions and worksheets would be a great way to introduce the concept of food sovereignty to any community.
As Dawn Morrison of the (Canadian) Indigenous Food Systems Networks says:
This tool is an excellent tool for Indigenous communities whose food security strategies are primarily based on farming and agriculture. For those communities whose traditional harvesting strategies are based on hunting, fishing and gathering, I recommend modifying it to include a broader ecological, political and cultural approach. All in all, it's a great tool that will provide a starting point and framework for assessing food sovereignty.
