With the launch of food policy consultations and the national Food Policy Summit in Ottawa, it has been a busy month at Food Secure Canada. Our members from across the country have been getting informed, mobilizing their members and actively engaging around what kind of food policy we would like to see in Canada. With new evidence from our friends at CFCC stating that 95% of Canadians think a nutritious diet is a basic human right, our Five Big Ideas are gaining momentum. We are ready to plant new ideas for Spring! Just as the government prepares to reveal their dates for public consultations, Food Secure Canada has released the first of a series of discussion papers to fuel future debates. Your involvement is critical in order to make sure our voices are heard. We need a food policy that is coherent, democratic, integrated and created to benefit all people. Now is the time to act so we can reap the fruits of our labor tomorrow!

Spring is in the air! Anyone interested in federal policy on food is very busy these days with many different government consultations underway. Food Secure Canada has been working hard to fine-tune our plan for a national food policy conversation that will help us build a sustainable and healthy future. We are pleased to release a new report on public procurement lessons as well as to be partners in the launch of Nourish. Thanks to all of our members who have given their advice and support or commented on our draft policy paper — soon to be available to the general public!

Its been a busy month for food policy, with lots of follow-up from work at our Toronto Assembly!  Food Secure Canada's New Farmers Initiative has crafted a policy brief which provides the government with precise and practical ideas about how the next Agricultural Framework can support the innovations new farmers are developing. We also have been active on Health Canada's consultations on Canada's Food Guide, providing context with a webinar on sustainable diets and encouraging participation. Also in the newsletter is a report back from PROOF's informative conference on household food insecurity research, and a summary of one of the key panel discussion of national food organizations on food policy at the recent Assembly. conversation of national food organizations session that was held at the Assembly bringing together other advocates of a national food policy. More than 900 people joined Resetting the Table, our 9th Assembly, for an unforgettable meeting of ideas, collective action and inspiring encounters. This newsletter provides a summary of the highlights from each day and of course, there will be many more articles, projects and conversations stemming from the Assembly. In the upcoming months, Food Secure Canada will be looking to our members and supporters to participate in consultations and campaigns around the national food policy. We are encouraged by the statements made by government representatives and energized by Assembly participants who want to be involved. We now have a unique opportunity to reflect on what was harvested during the Assembly and work together for a more fair, healthy and sustainable food system. Plus, check out the issues involved in Canada's Food Guide announcement.
