Watch the recording

There is a compelling evidence that healthy school food programs have the potential to improve student's diets, academic performance, and social functioning, and also impact theirlong-term health. Presenters will explain how their organizations implemented fruit and vegetable programs along with other strategies to improve the health of school food meals. After the presentations there will be time for Q & A.

In ManitobaThe Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba offers all schools the option of applying for funding to operate a Vegetable and Fruit snack program. Schools are also asked to include a fruit or vegetable with all other types of funded meals. Currently 204 schools receive funding in 91% of the school divisions in Manitoba. More information available on Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba website.

In British Columbia, Farm To School (F2S) is broadly defined as a school-based program that connects schools (K-12) and local farms. The goal of the program is to ensure children have access to fresh, local, nutritious, safe and culturally appropriate foods while at school. Farm to School programs aim to improve student nutrition, and to provide students with educational opportunities about foods and the local food system. More information available on Farm To School website.

In this webinar, Kayla Atkey from Alberta Policy Coalition for Chronic Disease Prevention (APCCP) will be discussing a recent evidence synthesis on school food policies, which explores the impact of these policies and related interventions on students’ dietary intake of fruits and vegetables and body weight status.

This webinar is part 2 of our series on School Food Programs to raise the profile of promising and innovative school food programs models in Canada in order to complement the work of the Coalition of Healthy School Food for a universal healthy school food program.
All recordings of this webinar series will be also be accessible on our website
