Tasting Food Democracy: A Community Conversation

TORONTO, 5 April 2013 – On Monday April 8 from 5 to 7 pm EDT, a coalition of organizations concerned with the future of food will discuss the development of a national food policy for Canada.  The event will take place at CSI Regent Park, 585 Dundas Street East and is co-sponsored by Food Secure Canada, the Toronto Food Policy Council, the Toronto Youth Food Policy Council, Sustain Ontario, FoodShare Toronto, and the Centre for Social Innovation.

2013 Alternative Federal Budget: Put Food in the Budget

Montreal, 12 March 2013 - Having no national food policy is expensive, costing Canadian taxpayers billions in stopgap programs that don’t address the underlying issues. Most recently, Olivier De Schutter, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, joined the chorus of voices across Canada calling for a national food policy.

Nation-wide mobilization around Right to Food

MONTREAL, 22 February 2013 – As the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food Olivier De Schutter prepares to deliver his report on Canada to the UN Council on Human Rights in Geneva on March 4, dozens of organizations across the country are mobilizing to engage in a dialogue with the UN expert about what needs to be done to respect to right to food in Canada and to take action locally and nationally. The list of events is rapidly growing and stretches from coast to coast to coast, including small towns and large cities in all provinces and territories.

Food Secure Canada Welcomes UN Report on Right to Food Calls on Government to Take Action

MONTREAL. 7 February 2013 – Food Secure Canada welcomes the report of the UN Special rapporteur on the right to food on Canada and hopes the Government will take its recommendations seriously. This report is the product of a mission to Canada undertaken last spring, at the invitation of the Government of Canada, that included several briefings organized by Food Secure Canada members in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and Winnipeg.  The report will be formally presented to the UN Council on Human Rights on March 4 in Geneva.
